The Phillies were shutout by the New York Mets for AN ENTIRE SERIES. Unbelievable. Yet another shutout came the Phillies way in a 3-0 loss to the Mets.
I hate to do it, but here are the dreadful numbers. The Phillies have been shut out in three straight games for the first time since 1983. They have been shut out four times in five games for the first time since 1974. One more and they would tie for the Major League record. And the game in which they did score, they were down by eight runs in the ninth inning.
The Phillies have not scored a run in 27 straight innings and 46 of the past 47 innings. The have not scored a run in 35 innings against the past five starting pitchers they have faced. And this is the same team who lead the league in runs the last two seasons?
They had their chances against Mike Pelfrey but couldn't do anything about it. The Phillies had runners on the corners with one out in the third when Polanco hit into an inning-ending double play. The Phils hit into double plays into three straight inning. They also had runners on first and second with one out in the sixth, but again couldn't bring a run across the plate.
Raul Ibanez was thrown out trying to steal second base in the seventh inning, but at least he tried.
It was unfortunate that they couldn't score because they wasted another terrific performance by Cole Hamels. He allowed two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. It looked like he might get through 7 innings with just a run, but Polanco booted a dead double-play ball in the seventh. Two runs scored because of the error and gave the Mets a 3 run lead.
Three straight shutouts and 4 out of 5 games without a run is simply inexcusable. Thank god we get to go to Florida now.
