It was time for a team meeting. Following the second straight shutout to the Mets and third in four games, Charlie Manuel decided after the 5-0 loss to the Mets it was time to talk it out. You could say that scoring in just one (meaningless) inning out of the last 4 games is time for a chit-chat.
The Phillies have been shut out in consecutive games for the first time since Aug 2008 and have been shut out three times in four games for the first time since June of 1990. The Phillies have been scoreless in 37 of their past 38 innings.
The Phillies have not scored a run in 28 innings against the past four starting pitchers they have faced.
The Phillies came within a foot of ending the scoreless streak when Ben Francisco doubled off the top of the left-center-field wall in the second inning. Sorry, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. That was it. They were pretty much completely hapless in the rest of the game.
Joe Blanton allowed six hits, five runs, four walks and one home run in 5 1/3 innings. 1 run or 100 runs, it wouldn't have mattered. I wonder if the Mets can shutout the Phillies for an entire season. We'll find out tomorrow.
