Just when you thought Hamels was finally back, he throws a clunker. The Phils enjoyed a brief early lead that dissapated when the D-backs hit a total of 5 homers to beat the Phils, 7-4.
Hamels and opponent Kris Benson looked good early on. The Phils struck first with a run in the third when Hamels doubled and Victorino followed with a triple.
Jayson Werth provided more excitement In the fourth on a seemingly routine play. With one out, Werth hit a deep fly to center field that was caught by Chris Young. But the ball slipped out of his glove to the ground in the exchange to his right hand. It seemed pretty clear that he made the catch, but second-base umpire Dale Scott ruled the ball to be in play and Werth continued to fly around the bases all the way to home plate. It was ruled as a rare four base error. D-backs manager A.J. Hinch argued the play with Scott and was ejected from the game.
Cole Hamels cruised through three scoreless innings and hit a road block in the fourth. Mark Reynolds hit a two-run homer to left with one out and Adam LaRoche followed with a solo shot for back-to-back homers. Chris Snyder added a two-run shot two batters later to give the D-backs a 5-2 lead. Kelly Johnson opened the fifth with another long ball and the score was 6-2.
As is generally the case, Hamels seemed unphased by the turn of events. "I gave up home runs," Hamels said. "It's baseball. It happens. You have to be able to execute pitches, and if you're not able to execute pitches, then that's what happens, those are the results. That's all I can really say."
Hamels threw six innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and was charged with the loss. He struck out seven and walked one. In his previous outing on Sunday against Florida, he worked eight innings, allowing only two runs on seven hits in a 2-0 loss.
J.C. Romero made his first appearance of the season in the seventh and gave up Johnson's second homer of the game to open the seventh. He pitched to two batters before being lifted.
