Phillies monthly review: May 2018

Phillies May Storyline

Despite a solid first month-plus, the Phillies started the month of May on a bit of a downturn, having lost two straight series to the Diamondbacks and Braves. That trend continued to begin May, as the Phillies lost two out of three to the Marlins and lost a series to the Nationals.

The May 6 loss to the Nationals was a particularly crushing one. The Phillies held a 4-1 lead in the 8th, but Tommy Hunter and Luis Garcia allowed 2 runs in the 8th and Hector Neris couldn't record a single out in the 9th inning of a 5-4 walkoff loss.

The Phillies did not allow that loss to the Nats, which gave them four straight series losses, to destroy their spirits. They instead took out their frustrations on the Giants in a 4-game sweep at home.

That same trend would resurface in the next series against the Mets. New York has pretty much owned the Phillies in recent years. The Phillies had not won a season series against the Mets since 2011 - that's six straight losing seasons against them. Heading into the May 11 affair and having lost the first two games in 2018, the Phillies were 42-73 against the Mets since 2011 (.365 winning percentage) and 25-53 against them (.321 winning percentage and 102-game pace of 110 losses) since 2013.

The Phillies looked poised to take the first game at home against the Mets and possibly reverse the curse when Jake Arrieta's 7.1 shutout innings helped the Phils to a 1-0 lead in the 9th, but Neris gave up back-to-back homers in a devastating 3-1 loss.

Like they had after Neris' previous blown save, the Phils came back with a win the next day, beat the Orioles in a rain-shortened one-game series, and split a four game series with the Cardinals in St. Louis.

It set up a big series with the Braves.

It was the fourth time the Phillies met the Braves already in the young season, and the Phils had lost all three of them. They would not lose a fourth. Terrific pitching performances by Nick Pivetta and Jake Arrieta gave the Phils a much needed series win against the Braves. Two days later, a Phils win coupled with a Braves loss put the Phillies in sole possession of first place for the first time since 2011.

It was then off to L.A. for a 10-game road swing which started with a four-game split with the Dodgers. The offense started to disappear, and hopefully it comes back if the Phillies want to remain in contention.

Here are the totals for the month and on the season.
